Broad Strategic Thinking
In their literature, White, Stallones, and Last (2013) identifies disease burden as a problem experienced on a global scale. Mental illness is one of the conditions contributes to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD). The author refrains from establishing mental illness as a problem that exclusively affects the United States. About 14 percent of the total disease burden globally involves mental illness. In this respect, the factors leading to prevalence of mental illness such as underservice, lack of access to behavioral and mental services, and insufficient health coverage are common in most States. Therefore, recommendations on policy and development of community-based programs made in the case of the United States can be employed across the world to reduce disease burden.
Social Development Aspects
The concept of social development in the context of reducing the burden of mental illness has not been addressed objectively in chapter 3 of White’s et al. (2013) work. To effectively explore the subject of mental disease burden, there is a need to examine the social determinants of the problem. According to Maselko (2017), the levels of income of the public influence the health disparities in a country. In a nutshell, issues regarding gender, income inequality, socioeconomic status, and social networks must be addressed to effectively reduce the prevalence of mental illness. Social development goals aimed at reducing the number of children with mental illness should focus on the efforts to raise education levels and promote employment at the community level.
