Introduction
Transgender people are faced by intense challenges and experience salient inequalities in the area of health care provision. Research and experience shows that the health care system lacks preparation in as far as proving culturally competent care is concerned. This lack of preparation has led to a scenario where most transgender people fail to have access to health care. This brings about various challenges especially considering that transgender people face increased health care needs that need to be addressed if the individual is to live a healthy life. This paper gives recommendations that can be used to improve the living conditions of transgender people.
Improving Health
One of the identified challenges that transgender people face is the access to health care for those in the lower economic income. The main challenge that this group faces is financial barriers that make the individuals in the lower economic bracket unable to afford the health care services that are available. In order to prevent this from happening in the coming days, it is important to take measures that improve the economic wellbeing of such individuals. These measures include ensuring that the transgender people are not discriminated upon on account of their gender since a large section of transgender people do not have an access to the employment pool (National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, 2009).
` According to the provisions of The Joint Commission which is tasked with hospital accreditation, hospitals are not supposed to discriminate on the basis of gender or sexual orientation. The Commission has also been working hard towards ensuring that all hospitals are culturally competent to provide care to transgender patients. Despite these provisions, many hospitals have however been discriminating on transgender people thus causing a large section of them to go without any medical treatment. This can be evaded by giving the Joint Commission the power to deregister hospitals that fail to offer treatment to transgender patients as stipulated in the registration guidelines (The Joint Commission, 2010). Before registration, hospitals that have been given accreditation by the Commission agree to the condition of not discriminating on anyone on the basis of their gender or sexual orientation and as such the commission should ensure that the hospitals stick by their pledge. Health care facilities are also supposed to utilize resources that have been provided to ensure the equitable provision of health care.
