Goal

* To provide residents with information about influenza
* Participants will know about the symptoms, treatment, and vaccination against Influenza

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, participants should:
* Explain what influenza is
* Be able to identify influenza when the symptoms manifest
* Know how to prevent influenza
* List the at-risk group
* Explain why one should get the influenza vaccine. 

Length

The lesson will take 30-60 minutes. This will depend on a number of factors, including the number of participants, the instructor’s teaching style, and the residents’ learning needs. 

Materials

* Pamphlet about Influenza
* Computer and Projector for PowerPoint presentation
* Two sets of self-assessment questionnaires: The first set will be issued before the lesson to determine what the residents know about influenza. Another set will also be issued after the lesson
* Any other resources that will help individuals with disabilities get the most out of the lesson

Teaching Method

The instructor will adopt a cognitive development teaching method. This method is ideal as it helps learners in understanding and synthesizing information (Dorgu, 2015). Specifically, the instructors will utilize discussion and questioning method which are effective in promoting learning. For discussion purposes, the instructor will divide the participants into small groups depending on their learning needs, allow each group to discuss an issue amongst themselves, and share their findings with the rest of the participants. For questioning purposes, the instructor will pose a question to the whole group and then receive responses from the participants. 

Activities

* Introduce the topic of influenza by asking the participants what they think it is. You should get responses from a few residents and then move on to the next activity
* Issue the participants with the self-assessment questionnaire. Be sure to explain that the questionnaires are meant to assess their knowledge about influenza prior to the lesson. The questions should be close-ended with multiple-choices a, b, c, d. The key questions in the questionnaire are:
* What is influenza?
* What are the symptoms?
* What causes influenza?
* How is it treated?
* How can you prevent avoid getting infected with influenza?
