Influence of Patient Education on Health Care
Unless the patient has been educated on managing and improving their condition, the physician's efforts to manage the illness will bear minimal fruits. Patient education instills knowledge to the patient to influence positive behavior and attitude that will see the maintenance and improvement of health (American Diabetes Association, 2018). Educating a patient before and after a medical procedure brings positive results and improves the prognosis. Education offers a suitable platform to disclose preventive services to the intended population, such as vaccination programs, disease screening, and access to the services (Dickinson et al., 2017). Patient education aims to prevent disease occurrence, manage the disease, and maintain optimal health. The essay will address responses from an interview to assess the influence of patient education in health care.
The interview was conducted on an eighty-two-year-old woman who has had type-two diabetes mellitus. She has attended diabetic clinics in the same facility for approximately ten years. The patient responded that she has always been taught how to care for herself to manage her blood sugar levels and prevent complications. A professional nurse teaches and assesses how she administers insulin injections in her monthly clinics. A professional dietitian also assesses her diet and teaches her how to adjust the diet and perform physical activity. Due to this follow-up, she has lost weight from one hundred and five kilograms to eighty-three kilograms in the past year.
Additionally, she has managed her blood sugar levels to less than 15mmol/L, and her doctor is considering stopping insulin injections and managing her through oral medications. She reports that her family, especially her daughter and son, assists her at home. Her daughter helps with complex chores around the house and in meal preparation. Her son helps to purchase food, medication, and other household utilities. She says that she does not spend much money on managing her condition since she has it all together. She says that her Medicaid card caters to her consultation fees and laboratory tests. She reports being aware of assistance services such as food, medication, and transportation services offered by a local diabetes support group. She, however, has never used them since her daughter and son can provide all she needs. On asking whether she has sought services from diabetes side clinics, she said she only relies on her local healthcare facility for professional management.
