Nurse shortage in the healthcare system is a serious problem resulting from several factors: an increased need for care, a significant number of the workforce reaching their retirement age, and healthcare legislation. According to Haddad, Annamaraju, and Toney-Butler (2020), the nursing profession also faces shortage challenges because of the lack of potential educators, high turnover, and poor workforce distribution. Studies have established that a sufficient number of nurses in healthcare facilities enhances patient safety, reduces mortality rates, and improves overall patient outcomes. Therefore, the nursing shortage problem is a severe problem that requires immediate interventions.
The United States has suffered from a critical nursing shortage for almost a decade. Unfortunately, this problem is expected to continue for many more years (Snavely, 2016). This problem is not unique to the United States but is also prevalent across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia (Haryanto, 2019). There are also state-to-state supply and demand variations based on shifts, demographics, and population movement growth. Based on the present health status, the highest shortage levels of nurses is expected to be felt by 2030 in California, Texas, New Jersey, and South Carolina (Haryanto, 2019). The rural hospitals and primary care settings have been the greatest victims of this shortage.
The nurse shortage problem has far-reaching consequences on the country's health care system and its economic health. The shortage affects the health care system in terms of both the nurses and the patients. The nurses are involved as the workload increases, which may amount to job stress, anxiety, and physical issues (Ghafoor, 2021). The problem jeopardizes patient's life and safety as there are insufficient personnel to take proper care of a large number of the patients.
Similarly, the economic impact of this shortage is undeniable. Hospitals have to pay billions of shillings to recruit and retain nurses.
