Many people, especially in large organizations, strive to become leaders. However, only some have the innate skill to execute an excellent leadership properly. In 2015, the United States of America spent one hundred sixty billion dollars to provide leadership enhancement programs. These leadership skills are cultivated through several experiences, apart from having the innate talent to lead. Thus, neophytes in this field frequently indulge in different organizations to expand their knowledge and to promote their emotional intelligence (Hart, 2017).
The term emotional intelligence was coined by Daniel Goleman, who was the first man to relate it to the business world using his 1998 HBR article. He found out that the previously established attributes such as assertiveness, resilience, fortitude, and ambitions, are inadequate for successful leadership. This gap may be due to a person’s lack of emotional intelligence, which is governed by self-consciousness, self-control, enthusiasm, understanding, and social skill (Goleman, Boyatzis, & Mckee, 2002).
Anand & UdayaSuriyan (2010) discovered that people ages forty-five and above, especially the non-degree holders and those who have worked for more than twenty years in an organization, possess an extraordinary level of emotional intelligence. Furthermore, these people prefer a “role model” type of learning in contrast to the diploma holders who favor instigating a typical forethought. Moreover, they also found out that emotional intelligence promotes positive interpersonal relationships, which allow individuals in an organization to act more efficiently using more effective problem-solving techniques that were learned by showing the members encouraging acts done with an empathetic heart.
