1 Provide observations and thoughts on the activities during 2-week Practicum on Oncology unit.
The 2-week Practicum on Oncology unit activities were aimed at helping me have a deeper understanding of people’s experiences in various treatment settings and how to apply my clinical skills to support them. The first observation I made when I entered the practicum is that each team member have different ways of helping the patients. Patient treatment was approached from a multidisciplinary perspective. The team was comprised of oncologists, receptionists, pharmacists, receptions, nurses, social workers and dietitians. This was something new to me. The team helped in becoming a member of the multidisciplinary team in my role as a nurse practicum student. This approach played a significant role because gave me an opportunity to acquire more experience in the various patient approaches. During this week I was not able to identify who the leader was because everybody acted in that capacity. The leading by example mantra was well cultivated in this setting. This gave me a challenge to re-evaluate my leadership model. Although I strive to lead by example, in most occasions, visitors are able to point me as the leader of my group. I admired this approach to leadership because it gives those who are around you an opportunity to develop themselves as well as have an influence in your own life. Sometimes it is good to be led by others or watch them lead.
2 Explain your place of influence in your professional life.
As a professional, I have been relying on the help of others in my career path. During my journey, I have met various people who have influenced me in different ways and that is what I want to do, influence those who re in my profession. Being a leader, I always strive to lead by example (Cunningham, 2016). In life, when we are demotivated, we restore the lost motivation and inspiration through the things we do, the people we interact with and the activities that make us happy. I try to avoid any negative energy that may restrain me from doing good to help those who are around me or need my help. Through doing what is good influences others to do the same.
