The testing of the hypothesis consists of potential critical tools for researchers. According to Shorten & Shorten (2015), hypothesis renders valued evidence that can be utilized to make decisions concerning the robustness or significance of the findings of the research. Statistical tests are essential components of answers to research questions. In the end, they define how clinicians and other health personnel can be confident in evidence to appraise clinical practice (Shorten & Shorten, 2015). As part of the research, hypotheses are predictive statements or definite, clear, and testable propositions on the likely outcome of a particular scientific study (Lavrakas, 2008). They are based on a specific attribute or relationship among variables.
According to Sacha &Panagiotakos (2016), hypothesis tests are established on the null hypothesis assumption. The null hypothesis statement indicates that there lacks a difference or relationship between the two variables being investigated. The null hypothesis is a simple technical requirement that renders a statistical context that is needed to enforce probabilistic calculations. As an illustration of the application of hypothesis testing and the null hypothesis, an example of quitting smoking using nicotine patches has been used. The case involves research used to compare the rate of smoking cessation for smokers who are randomly given a nicotine patch against those that are given a placebo patch. According to McDonald (2014), the null hypothesis, in that case, is that the percentage of smokers within the population who would relinquish smoking because of a placebo patch use and nicotine patch use are the same.
On the other hand, the alternative hypothesis is that the percentage of smokers within the population who would relinquish smoking because of a nicotine patch use would exceed the percentage that would quit while utilizing a placebo patch.
