There are varied types of viral hepatitis. However, hepatitis C is the most prevalent persistent blood-borne pathogen in the United States. Moyer (2013) posits that hepatitis C testing reportedly increased after the August 2012 change to CDC Testing Recommendations and the “B” rating on the initiative by the US Preventive Task Force. Notably, persons born from 1945-1965 include at least 75% of all HCV infections in the US. This morbidity rate justifies the recommendation to have testing centralized on baby boomers.
After the 2012 recommendations, there was increased testing among the target baby-boomer population. Guktind (2018) notes that even when the screening on the target group reduced the ramifications of the epidemic in the United States, an extension of the same to people born after 1965 and even PWID (people who inject drugs) would help reduce morbidity and mortality rates out of HCV.
