Amidst the required competencies in the skill base of assessing students with particular needs are the techniques used in choosing and using the assessment tool. Teachers apply assessment as part of the instructional procedure. Therefore teachers must be well informed of the right process followed in test administration and interpretation.
One significant of using assessment is that it assists in determining whether the students require special education.
The assessment also plays a significant role in establishing fairness in testing. The issue of equity in testing occurs in separate forms. For instance, teachers may under-refer student with a special need for a program intended for gifted students. On the contrary, the teacher may under-refer a student from a talented group to a plan for serving students with special needs. Typical scoring and administration failure are as a result of failure to create a rapport before the assessment.
