How to Improve Infant Mortality in Dallas County

Essay Instructions:

Conduct a “Windshield Survey” in a section of your community. Instructions for the survey can be found in Stanhope and Lancaster (2020) on page 383, Table 17.5. As you notice, conducting a Windshield Survey requires that you either walk around or drive around a particular section of the community and take notes about what you observe. A Windshield Survey cannot be conducted by reviewing websites or Google Earth only. It requires actually taking a look at the selected area of the community. This survey should be focused on the problem and population you have selected for your practicum project. If you choose, for example, obesity among Hispanic schoolchildren, you might want to locate a section of the community where many Hispanic children live, or you might want to conduct the Windshield Survey around where Hispanic children attend school. If Hispanic children are not found in a specific section of your community (e.g., Chinatown in San Francisco or Harlem in New York), then you may select the section of the community where you live or work but pay particular attention to your practicum population and practicum problem as you conduct a survey of the community as viewed through the eyes of the public health nurse.

Windshield Survey Findings
Many intersecting streets lead to the central area of the town in Dallas County. This leads to traffic congestion especially during the rush hours in the afternoon. Modes of transportation include private cars, trains, city buses, school buses, bicycles, and cabs. Bike lanes are provided and many residents walk in the sidewalks. The streets have curbs and intersections.
There are 15 parks, 19 churches, 19 schools, and 3 town halls. The parks have chairs, benches, tables, and fields that allow for picnics, playing games such as football, frisbee, and hide-and-seek. The real estates spread around the country and the majority are in the central area where most businesses operate. Shelters include apartments, condominiums, dormitories, family homes, and townhouses. Some buildings look sturdy while others look fragile.
Many businesses operate such as boutiques, restaurants, cafes, pet shops, school supplies, malls, museums, grocery stores, repair shops, hotels, and convenience stores. Restaurants have different motifs. Some are for fine dining, pastries, and fast food. Others offer a menu of pure meat, steaks, chicken, and vegan. These restaurants are mainly located in the central business area where the majority of people live.
There are 20 healthcare centers, including hospitals and clinics. The majority of the hospitals are located in the central area while only one is located outside the business district. These institutions are situated around one to two blocks away from each other.
Vulnerable Population
Babies born with low birth weight (LBW) comprise 8.5% of the Dallas population and early pregnancies. 39.1% of the teenage population gives birth secondary to early pregnancy. This results in an infant mortality rate of 6.6 per 100 live births which are high CITATION USN20 \l 1033 (U.S. News, 2020).
Jones (2019) of CBS news revealed that the Dallas County Hospitals exhaust $100, 000, 000 on teenage births annually. The majority of them are not high school graduates and only 2% have finished college by 30 years-old.
