Learning styles were not presented until the 1970's, thanks to Neil Fleming, who introduced a questionnaire called the VARK system in 1987 (Fleming, 1995). The VARK system is used to evaluate learning style. It is an insightful strategy that helps identify individual learning preferences, making it one of the effective assessment tools that that informs students about their learning styles. The Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic and Multimodal analysis produced by Fleming helps evaluate preferred learning styles, making individual make adjustments to maximize teach (Fleming, 1995).
The objective of this paper is to determine individual learning style and compare the results to the existing concept of learning styles of VARK. The paper will also reflect how educators can utilize V.A.R.K. analysis and adopt better strategies that meet student's different learning needs. To understand how to the VARK work one needs to take the VARK 16 question exams to determine his learning style as defined by the VARK. Students can compare their preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies and evaluated the changes needed to improve his learning skills (Aural Strategies, 2015).
Learning Style Summary
According to the results from VARK questionnaire, the score is as follows, Visual 11, Aural 11. Read /write 14 and 13 for Kinesthetic. The maximum score is 14 for Read/ write that shows my preferred learning style followed by Kinesthetic. According to my personal learning profile, read /write style is my learning style (The VARK Modalities, 2015). I prefer using written lists, and for Kinesthetic score shows that I prefer using examples or real situation. The score for Visual and aural are the same meaning that I look at the big picture and engage in discussion as part of learning.
For the multimodal section, I did not score, based on my profile there is no mode that stands out. According to the VARK profile, a multimodal learning comprises of a mixture of different learning preferences, meaning that one does not have specific learning modes that is really visible (The VARK Modalities, 2015). A multimodal individual can use a variety of learning modes or a combination of different elements to learn. Those who use all modes of learning prefer adding other modes of input or output. These include reading about the subject, hearing from trusted people, trying out things by themselves or grasping information in a diagram form. Each of these strategies and practices represents V.A.R.K (The VARK Modalities, 2015). At times multimodal learner can have difficulties learning if the class utilizes one style of learning because they learn best using multiple strategies. It is a fact that live lectures and practical lab experiences are some of the preferred learning style and is hands-on, that certainly help learners maximize their learning experience (The VARK Modalities, 2015).
