Background of Study
Despite the proven advantages of regular physical activity on BP, patients with chronic conditions like hypertension are less likely to engage in regular physical exercise. To address this problem, Magobe et al. (2017) engaged in research whose purpose was to determine the experiences of hypertensive patients in promoting lifestyles change through taking part in regular physical exercise. The study research question was; what are the experiences of patients with hypertension at the PHC clinics in Soweto with regard to facilitating their own health-promoting lifestyle change measures such as regular physical exercise? The findings of the study show that hypertension patients are keen to engage in physical exercise, which is crucial in improving their condition.
On the other hand, Beune et al. (2010) investigated the factors that influence physical activities among African immigrants with hypertension. The study’s objective is to explore and compare perspectives of Ghanaian, Surinamese and White-Dutch hypertensive patients with regard to PA. The research questions were: What do these patients understand by PA and what do they perceive as inhibitors or enablers of adopting or maintaining regular PA? The findings of the research indicate that while physical exercise is important in hypertension patients, it is inhibited by culture, financial limitation, and physical constraints.
Method of Study
Magobe et al. (2017) used a qualitative research design that is descriptive, exploratory, and contextual in nature. A purposive sampling method was used to select 44 hypertension patients from three different clinics. Data was collected using both audio-taped focus group interviews and individual audio-taped interviews while Tesch’s open coding method was used to group the data into segments. In contrast, Beune et al. (2010) employed a qualitative inductive research approach to collect data. Sixty-five (65) patients aged 35 to 65 years were selected on the basis of being diagnosed with hypertension. The selected patients were subjected to in-depth individual interviews, which were guided by a topic list. The list was written in Dutch but was translated from Dutch into Ghanaian-English by a translator. The collected data was analyzed using Strauss’s comparative method and coding procedures.
Audio-taped interviews allow the researcher to focus on listening and thinking about follow-up questions rather than taking notes. However, the thought of an interview being recorded or the idea that other individuals may listen to the interview later can cause anxiety to the patients. On the other hand, in-depth interviews provide the researcher with the opportunity to ask follow-up questions that generate a rich understanding of motivations and perceptions. Nevertheless, in-depth interviews are time-consuming because the researchers must organize, transcribe, and analyze the collected data.
