In the United States of America, the leading cause of infant mortalities is low birth weights. Amongst the Black women living in Alabama, there is a high probability of birthing a low weight baby. According to Wanda, Maria, and Brad (2017), being black is a leading factor to low birth weight baby. Even when other issues such as socio-economic level, level of education and maternal age are taken into account, the low birth rates amongst the Black women precede any other race in Alabama. Despite the efforts to protect pregnant women`s health the disparities in the low birth weight amongst blacks have prevailed for over four decades.
Pre-term births have contributed to the increase in the infant mortality rates. Research in the USA has continued to reveal the disparities in pre-term birth rates continue to persist.
