Hypersensitivity Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions are an overreaction of the immune system to an antigen which does not usually trigger an immune response. They are usually exaggerated immune responses. They are also sometimes unwanted reactions released by the normal immune system. There are various types of hypersensitive reactions depending on the type of immunity disorders. Immediate hypersensitivity refers to allergic reactions that are localized or systematic. These are also known as anaphylactic reactions. These reactions cause tissue damage.
Cytotoxic reactions are those reactions where the antibody reacts directly with antigens. Cytotoxic reaction examples include reactions as a result of blood transfusion and autoimmune diseases (Vaillant and Zito, 2019). Delayed hypersensitivity results in the interaction of antigens with the lymphocytes’ surface. Finally, Immunocomplex reactions are another type of hypersensitive reaction, which results in the production of PNMs; this releases enzymes which damage body tissues.
