Patient and staff demographics are becoming more diverse day-by-day. The encroaching multiculturalism population in the healthcare industry is a result of increasing variations in the national origins, gender, races, ages, languages, religious affiliations, disabilities, and sexual orientations, socioeconomic and occupational disparities. Diversity is significant in any professional discipline, and the healthcare industry is an exceptional example. A culturally and ethnically diverse patient population calls for more diverse and culturally sensitive healthcare providers. Studies have proven that diverse workforces are better problem solvers, and more primed, which is vital in healthcare. Today, physicians and nurses are passionately dealing with a culturally diverse patient population, and therefore, conscious cultural competence is a necessary initiative. In that case, Purnell’s Model of Cultural Competence (PMCC), is a classic ethnographic model that fosters the ease of culturally understanding patients in the process of administering proper medical care. In other words, the model presents a framework that guides a culturally diverse staff towards cultural competence.
The Purnell theory was purposely developed to provide nurses with a guideline for evaluating cultures and how they can promote their competence in the healthcare setting. The reasoning behind the model was that when the healthcare team becomes culturally sensitive, they also become proactively capable of helping patients with personal and cultural practice (Purnell, 2014). In view of the fact that each group of people attempts to uphold their valued cultural norms, the caregivers and patients need to bond and communicate to conjointly value each other from the services. Typically, the model is presented in a circular diagram within parallel circle rings that represents four demographic parameters, namely the global society, communication, family, and person. In from the fourth “person ring,” there are fields highlighting the twelve cultural domains and their concepts (Purnell, 2014). The twelve domains are considered essential in assessing the traits and behaviors of various cultural and ethnic groups.
In essence, the model is relevant in transcultural healthcare as it offers nurses with a foundation of understating different traits of various culture. The medics become adequately equipped to view attribute of patients such as experiences, stimulation, and their perceptions about the diseases and healthcare in general (Ray, 2018). The model primarily serves as a clinical cultural evaluation tool for nurses by offering a range of primary and secondary settings through which cultural competence can be achieved (Ray, 2018). The theory is largely pertinent in training, research, and application in the nursing industry.
