As a Nurse Manager I see myself as a person who has a direct influence on the attitude of the nurses towards their work and their workplace. Thus, in order to create a professional atmosphere that is conducive for healing, I must have a direct input on it myself by having the necessary qualities - Personal and professional accountability, career planning, personal journey disciplines, reflective practice reference behaviors/tenets. Below are my self-reflection based on the four qualities said above.
Personal and Professional Accountability
As a Nurse Manager, I can see my activeness and congeniality as an asset towards my work. In the field, nurses have to be more open and lively, especially when treating patients with acute illnesses. Thus, I believe that the energy that I have and that I input towards my work can have a significant effect towards the other employees. At the same time, people say that I have a good sense of humor. I do hope that I have enough that could make the workplace more lively and conducive for work. However, one weakness that I have is my mood shifts. There are times when I just feel like down and stressed out, changing the way I work towards others. My mood swings might not be that apparent, but still I know that it is noticeable more especially because during those times, I just prefer to be quiet and less interactive as compared to times when "I’m in the mood". When it comes to accountability, I always take responsibility of the things which I know I’m responsible of. Despite delegating work to others, I still see myself as responsible for the results that they will produce. I do not let them take the full blame if an accident happen, and, at the first place, I try my best to prevent it happening by carefully guiding and helping them whenever they needed.
Career planning
In terms of career planning, I always make sure that the choices that I take are those which are aligned with my goals and aspirations. For other people who I know (more particularly friends), I give them advice whenever they’re making a difficult decision in their lives. Personally, I see that my career should be a top priority, more especially because a Nurse Manager (and nurse) deals directly with a person’s well-being. However, one weakness that I can see when it comes to my career planning is that there are times when I fail to make the right decisions especially when my mood shifts. In other words, I make decisions which are not directly parallel with my own career goals.
