Data Analysis
The study by Pace, et al. (2012) analyzed data using SPSS version18. Specifically, the software was used in calculating the kappa statistic where a kappa between 0.81 and 1.00 was interpreted as an indication of perfect agreement. A negative kappa was interpreted as indicating no agreement between the responses of the reviewers. This measure was appropriate because it addressed the research question on the reliability of the MMAT tool. Type I and II errors were not addressed in the study, thus the possibility of rejecting a true null hypothesis or not rejecting a false null hypothesis was not put into consideration.
Reliability and Validity
The reliability was measured pre and post discussion. Different studies were appraised using the MMAT tool by different reviewers. The reliability and validity were confirmed because the same results for different assessment were realized. The findings were well summarized and the researchers utilized the use of tables to summarize the results. The precision of estimates was a 95% confidence interval.
Discussion
Interpretation of the Findings
The major findings in the study by Pace, et al. (2012) were discussed within the context of prior research where the researchers echoed the findings of other researchers on similar concepts. However, the report did not address issues concerning limitation or generalization of the results. It is therefore not possible to determine whether the interpretation was within the study’s limitation.
Implications/ Recommendation
Even though the study did not present any clinical implications of the study as recommended by Polit and Beck (2012), the researchers recommended that further evaluation of assessment tools be necessary to ensure that qualitative studies were adequately appraised.
Global Issues
Presentation
The research report was well-written and organized in a way that made it easy to appraise it. The report was organized in sections, starting with the abstract, method, results, and discussion. The report was also made accessible to nurses since it was published in a nursing journal and is available online.
Researcher Credibility
The researchers have the necessary background for the study because some of them have qualifications in family medicine, and others have qualifications in participatory research (Pace et al., 2012). Thus, their interpretation and discussion of the data is trustworthy
Summary Assessment
The study provides meaningful information that can be used in the nursing discipline, especially in nursing research, because it provides information on assessment tools that nurses can use in critical appraisal, especially when appraising mixed studies. This is necessary because nurses’ ability to appraise studies effectively enables ...
