Evidence-based practice is a process where nurses make clinical decisions by use of the best available research evidence, preferences of patients, and their clinical knowledge. The process has gained popularity as its implementation in clinical settings help in solving clinical issues and promotes the provision of quality health care. Adopting Evidence-based Practice in Clinical Decision Making: Nurses' Perceptions, Knowledge, and Barriers is a nursing journal regarding evidence-based practice. Majid, Foo, Luyt, Theng Chang and Mokhtar wrote the article. Its focus is to establish nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards the process and the possible factors that would develop barriers towards the adoption of the evidence-based practice.
Summary of the Key Points of the Article
The article points out that evidence-based practice indicates a shift among professionals of health cares from the traditional emphasis on commanding judgments to an emphasis on information derived from prior studies and research. It highlights that nurses have positive attitudes towards the evidence-based practice and are more involved in decisions making raising the importance of the nurses adopting the process to come up with best and efficient decisions (Majid et al. 2012). The article also outlines that nurses would be encouraged to implement the evidence-based practice if they get some training of EBP and mentoring from nurses with EBP experience. Also, it outlines that some factors pose barriers to the adoption of EBP. For example, lack of adequate time and resources factors created barriers to EBP adoption. The article also outlines that the use of jargon and statistical terms in research articles creates obstacles to the adoption of EBP as nurses are unable to interpret the content in the research articles.
