Feuerstein & Falchuk (2016) identified nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, obesity, smoking, and opiates as risk factors for developing diverticulitis. Additionally, diverticulitis is more common in people who eat low fiber content. Dietary factors, intestinal motility, intestinal microbiota (flora), and alterations in the connective tissue affect the colon’s proper functioning.
The colon wall comprises three layers, and the mucosa is the internal layer, and the diverticula usually appear in weaker wall areas. Treating diverticulitis often requires antibiotics and high-fiber diets indicate infections. Dieting can worsen diverticulitis symptoms.
