The United States (US) Healthcare System
The United States of America is famous in the health field due to some of its well -known hospitals in the world such as the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic and world-renowned medical schools such as the Johns Hopkins and Harvard Medical School. Despite being infamous, its healthcare system is still quite ineffective due to the absence of a universal healthcare law that prompted its citizens to avail of insurance programs from private companies and/or through public funding (International Insurance, n.d.).
Healthcare Delivery
The National Quality Strategy (NQS) pointed out three objectives to upgrade the healthcare system in the U.S. This has been done to overcome the flaw in the U.S.’s healthcare system. These are 1) To achieve a better care, the National Healthcare and Disparities Report (QDR) is utilized to monitor all of the contributors in this field such as physician office, hospital outpatient department (OPD), and nursing home visits, as well as the number of days of hospitalization and/or institutionalization.;2) It aspires to pursue a healthy society.;3) and to reduce medical expenses (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2017).
Finance
In 2018, the costs of health care reached $3.6 trillion which was 4.6% greater than the percentage increase in 2016 and 2017 which were both only 4.2%. Also, in 2018, the U.S. government decreased the allotted budget to health care by 17.7%. This resulted in a total of 0.4% rise in health spending secondary to both private and public insurance companies. 84% of the nationwide health spending was from individual medical expenses. Furthermore, 30.7 million Americans did not avail of an insurance program in 2018. This number is due to a rise in uninsured citizens in 2017 (1 million) (Hartman, Martin, Benson, & Catlin, 2019).
Of these figures, the U.S government and families are responsible for the largest expenses in health which totaled approximately 56%, with a 28% cost individually. Privately-owned businesses, (20%), state and local government units (17%), others (7%), followed, respectively (Hartman, Martin, Benson, & Catlin, 2019).
The private insurance companies added 34% of the nationwide health expenses which totaled $1.2 trillion in 2018. Medicare and Medicaid, both of which are private insurance companies, contributed $750.2 billion (21%) and $597.4 billion (16%), respectively (Hartman, Martin, Benson, & Catlin, 2019).
Management
The management of health care is governed by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
