As a nurse, and just like any other nurse, I employ the use of research to improve the quality of care, to answer numerous questions about my practice, to shape the policy of health and to in the generation of other research questions. In doing this, I will, therefore, require high quality, strong evidence-based research to confront the questions based on policy and practice. The following are the strategies that I as a nurse can employ to read and critique literature pertinent on my practice.
On deciding to read about a literature pertinent, I will first want to find out if it is about my question of interest or it can be employed in my nursing practice. I will then consider if the title of the material describes the article accurately. A good title should be informative to convey variables, methods, and concepts (Louise, 2012). The next thing I will consider is abstract. I will consider if it is a representation of the entire literature. This helps me to identify if it is actually the article I want to read. I would sometimes use it to get an overview of the entire writing and never read it.
I would then move to the introduction. Does it make clear the purpose of the article or the writing? A good introduction forms the basis of the article providing the research question, statement of purpose and the study's rationale. In cas...
