ANA Code of Ethics and Code of Ethics for Government Service
ANA Code of Ethics for nurses outlines the ethical responsibilities and functions of every person joining the nursing profession. On the other hand, the Code of Ethics for the Government Service Employees concisely outlines the regulations that people working in the government service must observe. One similarity that the two bear is that they both advocate for integrity. The ANA Code of Ethics stipulates that individuals in the profession must conduct themselves appropriately and strive to maintain integrity (ANA, n.d.). In the same vein, Code of Ethics for the Government Service implores all officials to expose any corrupt practices whenever they are discovered. It also exhorts officials in the government service to never use confidential information entrusted to them for personal gain. The other similarity is that both expressly forbid discrimination and unfair treatment of people seeking services. They both advocate for the dignified treatment of all individuals in all circumstances. To be precise, they influence the behavior of the staff considerably (NCSL, 2011). On the other hand, the two codes of ethics have several glaring differences. For instance, the ANA Code of Ethics categorically stipulates that a nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient whether they are individuals or the community. Contrastingly, the Code of Ethics for Government Service demands that civil servants put loyalty to the highest moral principles and country above persons or parties. The other difference is that nurses can use their discretion and individual collective knowledge to set conditions that are conducive whereas civil servants are completely forbidden from making any private promises.
Nightingale Pledge versus Oath of Office for Elected Officials
During the induction of nurses into the profession, they normally take an oath known as the Nightingale Pledge. The pledge is what guides them in the discharge of their mandate throughout their career. Similarly, elected officials also take an oath which is an affirmation that they will discharge their mandate within the confines of the constitution (Neal, 2021).
