Adolescence depression is a serious public health issue. The contributing factors for adolescence depression include a history of depression or mental illness in the family, trauma such as parental loss in childhood, and chronic illness. Other factors that contribute to adolescence depression include academic stress, peer pressure, emotional neglect, and family financial problems (Helpguide.org, n.d.). The symptoms of depression in adolescence include increased sadness, anxiety, and feeling of hopelessness, irritability, anger, hostility, frequent crying, withdrawal from friends and family, loss of interest in daily activities, changes in eating patterns, sleep problems, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, fatigue or lack of energy, problems concentrating, unexplained pains and aches, and also suicidal thoughts (Helpguide.org, n.d.).
