The physician-patient relationship is considered a keystone of care at any healthcare system. A physician, regardless of their gender, is responsible for diagnosing the disease and providing proper medical assistance. It may not be possible for the physician to carry on his/her work without proper communication with the patient. It has been observed that a physician’s gender dramatically influences the physician-patient relationship. For example, a female patient may not be able to talk to the male doctor as effectively as she can speak to the female doctor. During pregnancy or at the time of the delivery, she would love a female doctor to assist her in the emergency department rather than a male doctor. The same is the situation of male patients.
