Locke’s arguments
Locke has not managed to adequately offer substantial explanation regarding ways through which we may conceive an apple as having qualities like shiny, hard, round and red, while we do not have distinct or clear idea regarding how it might be (Anstlet, 2003). This is due to his inability to recognize existence of outside world within his arguments.
Locke does not offer proper description regarding experienced relationships which link human experience concerning external world with the world itself, wherein objects are simply sense data collections within individuals who observe them. This therefore makes it difficult for individuals to build up ideas to visualize actual occurrences within real world (Anstlet, 2003). Conceive an apple as having qualities like shiny, hard, round and red, while we do not have distinct or clear idea regarding how it might be through Locke’s ideas therefore turns out to be difficult. Outside world makes it possible for individuals to have proper imagination regarding various life aspects wherein they are able to relate ideas with reality. In this case, “individuals reflect on how the objects they have ideas about may have different meaning then they radically perceive.” His approach towards ideas has not been able to connect imaginations with actual world occurrences since he holds that outside world existence is not real.
George Berkeley’ arguments
Through the various arguments which have been brought out by Berkeley, it is apparent that he has adequately been able to bring out proper explanation regarding ways through which we may conceive an apple as having qualities like shiny, hard, round and red, while we do not have distinct or clear idea regarding how it might be. This has been facilitated by his ability to utilize subjective idealism within his work (Pappas, 2000). Subjective idealism is perceived as a theory which offers proper description regarding experienced relationships linking human experience concerning external world with the world itself, “wherein objects are simply sense data collections within individuals who observe them.” Idealism in this case is perceived as a theory which holds that essential reality nature lies within reason or consciousness. It is apparent that idealism is perceived as philosophical theory holding that experience or knowledge is eventually based upon mental activity.
Berkeley’s unconventional account concentrates on tactual and visual objects. He puts forward that visual perception regarding distance is usually explained by correlation which exists amid touch, sight and ideas (Pappas, 2000).
