Introduction
A national monument is a monument that is constructed to remember or to honor an event or something of a national importance, these events could include war or the country’s founding. This term could also refer to a specific memorial rank, site of national heritage, in which case most of them are as a result of their cultural importance as opposed to their age. The purpose of these monuments is to represent the nation and more important to portray the national identity of that particular country.
These monuments in the United States of America are areas that are protected just like the national parks, but the difference is that the president of the country at that moment can declare an area as a national monument without the approval of the congress. In addition the national parks receive more funding and protection to wildlife than the national monuments (Agan, 90).
List of monuments in US
The United States of America has more than one hundred protected areas that are referred to as national monuments. There are two authorities in the country that declare an area as a national monument; the president can, through executive powers and the congress through legislation. It was not until the 1906 when the president was able to use the executive powers to declare an area a national monument through the Antiquities Act. The purpose of this act was to let the president be able to preserve an area that is of national importance without waiting the process of the unconcerned congress to pass it. The whole idea was to make sure that the prehistorically and historical site in the united state was protected without delay of politics (Agan, 14).
These national monuments in the united states are more concentrated in twenty seven states with Arizona leading in the list by having eighteen, followed closely by new Mexico having twelve and California has five has the list goes on. Out of the national monuments, fifty two of them are protect areas of national importance; the ten geological sites, marine sites which are seven, and five volcanic sites. Native Americans are associated with twenty two monuments.
