Recognizing Words in Print: Strategies and Activities

Essay Instructions:

When teaching students to recognize words in print, teachers can use a variety of activities before, during, and after reading to help students understand words, word meanings, and how words go together. Utilizing appropriate strategies that incorporate print concepts will help increase students’ word recognition skills.
Use the “Recognizing Words in Print Template” to complete this assignment.
Part 1: Strategies
Research and summarize, in 250-500 words, a minimum of five strategies for teaching word recognition and print concepts to elementary students with language delays or disabilities. Keep in mind strategies that help students monitor for their own errors. Within your summary, identify the conditions under which the identified strategies are intended to be delivered (e.g., content area, class setting, required resources, if intended for a specific type of disability).
Support your findings with 2-3 scholarly resources.
Part 2: Activities
Identify a small group of 2-3 kindergarten students, using the “Class Profile,” who would benefit from further development of their word recognition or print concepts skills.
Identify a text appropriate to use with the small group identified.
Draft a 250-500 word outline summarizing three activities to reinforce word recognition and print concepts, utilizing the identified text.
Be sure to incorporate at least three of the strategies from Part 1 into your activities.
Part 3: Rationale
In 250-500 words, rationalize your instructional decisions from Part 2. Be sure to explain how the identified strategies and activities enhance the language development of the students in the identified small group. Cite the “Class Profile” where appropriate.
While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Part 1: Strategies
* Strategy 1: Differentiated Instructional Materials
Using differentiated classroom instructions supports personalized learning that enables the instructor to tailor the instructions based on the unique learning needs and capabilities of a student. This applies to all students and is also effective for those students with learning difficulties and special needs resulting in improvement in academic performance. An example of this is having materials in the classroom that have different levels of readability.
* Strategy 2: Call and Response
This strategy is done by having the students repeat the words that are read by the teacher. The call and response strategy promotes the association of the auditory stimuli from the teacher to what the words look like and their meaning. The strategy can be used in a general setting and is found to be beneficial to all types of students in helping them recognize words in print and is even applicable to other subjects such as math.
* Strategy 3: Increased Practice Time
This strategy is best used with the differentiated instructional materials along with the consideration of the class size. Letting the students have more opportunities to respond and apply what they have learned while receiving guidance from the teacher will promote learning, retention, and progress monitoring in their ability to recognize words in print. During the given practice time, the student will also be able to monitor their progress including their errors and aspects that needs improvement.
* Strategy 4: Check-In/Check-Out
The check-in/check-out strategy applies to students that require more feedback from their teacher. This promotes a collaborative environment that targets the learning difficulties of a student. At the start of the intervention the expectations and key points that need to be addressed are established and is worked on during the given time, then it is assessed at the end of the session.
* Strategy 5: Increased Font Size in Reading Materials
Using reading materials that have a larger font size will enable the children to visualize the words better for more retention and association with the spoken word and its corresponding meaning. This strategy helps reinforce the sight words that students already know while also enabling them to recognize more words in print as they read more. Poster-sized materials and projectors are some of the resources that may be used in this strategy.
