NGSS PHENOMENA PRESENTATION
A phenomenon is a natural occurrence or event that can be observed and can be explained scientifically. The use of a phenomenon to teach students encourages students’ involvement in learning. It also encourages creative and intelligent thinking among students. So that students can fully understand the topic chosen, it is important to choose a phenomenon that students can relate to, in their day to day activities. In NGSS, there are several phenomena presented but for this essay, I pick the phenomenon of “who moves- sky or us?” which I will teach to grade 5 students. I will use the following steps to teach the phenomenon:
1.Identify a phenomenon
While teaching a phenomenon, the first step should be to pick an appropriate natural occurrence that all students can relate to. In this case, from the NGSS phenomena presentation, I choose the phenomenon of “who moves- sky or us?”. This is because, all students can relate to the fact that sometimes either the earth seems to move, or the people living on earth. This is because, the sun will be located in one direction in the morning, and as the days goes by, it will seem to be changing its position until it finally disappears in the evening. At night, the moon will be seen in the sky but its position will keep changing. This also happens to the stars which sometimes seem to be moving.
