Programs that work with and teach disabled individuals
Individuals with disabilities are perceived as people with less intelligent and have limited potential to achieve much in life. They experience several conditions that affect the levels of acquisition, retention, understanding, and use of both non-verbal and verbal information (Snell & Brown, 2013). Even though individuals with learning disabilities may demonstrate underachievement compared to those without disabilities, individuals with disabilities can experience success beyond school if supported appropriately (Snell & Brown, 2013).
Several programs have been designed to assist these groups of individuals in overcoming their learning challenges. Below are three programs I observed that are implemented within different settings. Assistive technology programs are readily available programs that help those with many types of disabilities (Dell, Newton & Petroff, 2016). Assistive technology programs incorporate electronic devices like Abbreviation Expanders, Alternative Keyboards and audio publications to support children with learning disabilities (Dell, Newton & Petroff, 2016).
Assistive technology can help students struggling with math by providing audio or visual support that guides the student on a step-by-step process to calculate basic math problems (Dell, Newton & Petroff, 2016). Abbreviation expanders are software programs enabling users to create, store and reuse common abbreviations. Abbreviation expanders help learners learn proper spelling of words and phrases (Dell, Newton & Petroff, 2016). Alternative keyboards are utilized in classrooms to enable students with learning disabilities have better input choices when using learning gadgets as they contain graphics to assist in comprehension (Dell, Newton & Petroff, 2016).
