The use of human subjects in research is important to enhance the advancement of knowledge, especially on issues that directly affect human beings, such as diseases. That being said, it is important to ensure that human subjects are willingly participating in studies and are not doing so at great risks to their health and wellbeing. To ensure this, researchers need to adhere to the set ethics in human subjects, obtain informed consent from participants, and gain approval from an institutional review board (IRB).
Ethics are necessary when conducting research with human subjects because they ensure that researchers stay within the agreed-upon research standards and are held accountable for their actions. According to Shamoo and Khin-Maung-Gyi (2021), ethics govern how researchers conduct themselves and their research, thus ensuring that human subjects are protected. Without research ethics, researchers may intentionally or unintentionally violate the human rights of participants and expose them to inhumane and/or risky experiments. To avoid exposing human beings to deliberate or unintentional harm during research, researchers need to abide by ethics to guide them towards doing the right thing.
Informed consent allows participants to voluntarily participate in research studies after receiving full information from the researchers. Researchers must ensure that several key elements are met to obtain informed consent. These include establishing the competency of potential participants, providing potential participants with all the relevant information essential for making an informed decision, and ensuring that participation in the study is voluntary (Resnik, 2018).
