My family has three possessions that have social and cultural significance, and they include the gold plated bracelet, basketry, and a human face stone carved sculpture. A gold-plated wrist bracelet is a piece of thin metal jewelry coated with liquid gold. It originates from several past family generations and has been passed on to the current generation from our forefathers. On the other hand, basketry is a process of weaving artifacts like baskets, furniture, and mats. They are woven from fibrous materials like sisal threads, animal air, and pliable materials. Basketry is a hands-on skill passed from our great grandparents and has been greatly embraced in our family.
The human-faced sculpture is a stone carving passed from our forefathers, given to the family head, and passed on to the incoming family head. The sculpture plays a significant cultural and ethnic role and religious purpose. A gold-plated bracelet is worn on the wrist and relates to the ancient blue beads in the African American culture. In ancient times, a gold-plated bracelet signified wealth and family position in society. A family in possession of gold bracelets was regarded as a wealthy one and regarded as a first-class family, hence giving the family a social ranking. Women wear bracelets to enhance their beauty and attract attention as bracelets are colorful (Bakker & McKeown, 2020).
