Maslow Hierarchy of Needs and Consumer Purchase Decisions
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory by Abraham Maslow explaining the categories that humans use to define their needs and the prioritized behaviors over them. The needs comprise psychological, safety, self-actualization needs, love and belonging, and esteem. The human needs are presented in the Maslow theory using a pyramid shape. In the pyramid, the high level and imperceptible needs are located at the top, while the basic needs are at the bottommost. Addressing the high-level needs requires fulfillment of the basic needs first. The first needs are psychological needs located at the lowest part of the Maslow pyramid. These needs are the most essential for human survival and include food, water, shelter, clothing, rest, health services, and reproduction. According to Hopper (2020), Maslow’s theory dictates that these needs should be addressed before humans move to satisfy any other needs. The following needs in the lower pyramid level are safety, including well-being, health security, protection from theft and violence, and financial security.
Up the pyramids are love and belonging needs which encompasses the human social needs. Among the social needs are family bonding and friendship. The bonding includes biological family members and the chosen family, such as from spouse or foster family. Also, the needs include physical and emotional intimacy needs, ranging from sexual relationships to emotional bonding that can lead to kinship elevation. Also, social groups’ membership can play a crucial role in achieving social needs. The social groups may include teamwork at work, union membership, charity groups, or a movement (Fallatah & Syed, 2018). The higher-level needs include esteem needs and self-actualization needs. One’s ego drives esteem needs, and the basic components are self-esteem and self-respect. Maslow explains that humans should value and dignify themselves and others (Hopper, 2020). Self-actualization needs are the contentment and full potential fulfillment in a person. The self-actualization needs range from education, talent discovery, potential exploration, care for others, and achievement of personal goals.
An example of how I responded to the Maslow hierarchy of needs forces is how I manage my finances. Before spending on other things, my house rent, food, and essential shopping come at the top of my list. I then pay my health insurance premium to ensure I am covered and have the health security considered. I can then decide to secure part of my income to hang out with friends or participate in a feeding program for the homeless.
Narccisms
From Smith’s story, the moral lesson is the definition of narcissism and triggers and characters of the behavior and tendencies. Narcissism involves the need to make people know the better side of a person based on what the person wants them to see, hear or know about them. The story expresses the things people do to seek confidence and self-assurance from people to show them that they are better in the different ways that society views them. Smith expresses the characters portr...
