I have attached two readings that will help to prepare for the discussion. The first describes the emergence of a distinctive multi-racial and multi-generational culture and political sensibility in the suburbs of the San Gabriel Valley, east of Los Angeles. The second is made up of selections from an important work of architectural and urban theory: Ladders (1996) by Albert Pope, in which the author puts forward the model of the "ladder" to describe the fundamental (and increasingly global) spatial configuration of postwar (sub)urban development and its divergence from the prewar urban core. The hope is that we can use the seminar to both sharpen our understanding of the spatial, social and environmental context of suburban and exurban areas, in which the majority of Americans (and many global citizens) today live and work, as well as our understanding of where architects may find opportunities to intervene productively in their continuing development. What are the historical, current, and potential future impacts of the built form of postwar suburban development on our society and environment. The focus of the studio is on understanding and imagining what might be done with the vast suburban building stock that--with changing patterns of work and consumption--is approaching (or has reached) the end of its first useful life; but which, for environmental, economic and perhaps socio-cultural reasons, cannot be simply ignored and replaced, but must be adaptively reused. I have attached the studio syllabus for some additional context on what we are doing.

Understanding how to apply the knowledge, skills, and information gained from a symposium is essential for anyone. It allows him to improve his knowledge and skills that he can use for his career. Accordingly, the symposium that I attended helped enhance my understanding of the different developments in urban landscape and architecture. This includes the development of linear cities, centric metropolises, and urban landscapes in light of urban expansion and development that have been ushered by the consistent pursuit of capitalist expansion. In line with this, however, I also learned a lot about how these relate to societal issues, such as racism and class bias.
Concepts and Theories
One of the main concepts and theories that I learned from the symposium was the development of the centric metropolis and linear cities in line with the urban expansion of a place. In one of the discussions in the symposium, it was noted how linear cities are much more superior to centric metropolises for meeting the needs of the citizens. Linear cities allow for a better distribution of resources, transportation, and even economic output than the traditional centric metropolis used in the 1920s that focused most of its development in the ‘center’ of the urban landscape.
Another concept that I learned in the symposium was the concept of differentiated geography in the housing market. From the 1970s, it was shown how different racial groups tend to create a differentiated space in specific locations since some racial sectors tend to stay rather than move away from the place relative to economic changes in both the market.
