Knowing the history of an artist allows us to understand what motivated him to join this field. For instance, Fernando Botero, a Colombian artist, showed an interest in art in his childhood. As he grew up, he started painting and learned a lot of techniques from the Spanish colonial and pre-Columbian art. He spent many years studying the art treasures of Florence and Paris. Those who don’t know anything about Fernando’s background might consider him an ordinary artist or painter. Thus, it is essential to dig deeper and understand the basics of art, evaluate an artist’s emotions behind a particular work, and discover his history. That can change our interpretation of his work to an extent.
The visual information of a painting or sculpture is the very first thing we pay attention to. Given that we get easily attracted to colorful things, the paintings and sculptures that are visually appealing and adorable receive most of the attention. As an ordinary viewer, I may not like to know the background of a particular artwork; instead, I will pay attention to how beautiful, informative and engaging this artwork is. However, the painters and artists would definitely want to know the details of a particular artwork. Their comments and judgments won’t be based on the visual information, but on the background information.
Art is all about sharing our intuitions, emotions, desires, and thoughts. It doesn’t need background information for its meaning to be complete because it can create its own meanings based on historical facts and theories. Every artist has his own point of view and mental capabilities.
