Reflection on Marriage
Marriage, as a social construct, is one of the most talked about the topic in social circles. My notion of marriage is quite open and flexible: I feel that marriage represents broader issues and expectations, and this explains why the current emerging forms of unions like gay and lesbian marriages are not surprising to me. Of course, my family and relatives expect me to get into a marriage that is based on ‘true love’ and grow a family. I feel that the definition of a contemporary understanding of marriage is quite elusive.
In many instances, I have seen people marry each other due to various reasons, including sharing similar values, financial and wealth motives. I understand the meaning of marriage as a social institution that people develop sexual, intimate, and interpersonal relationships, with a view or raising children or not, and such relationships can be leveraged for various reasons. The reasons that underpin unions in marriages are informed by either different needs or unified needs of the couple or concerned parties.
The concept of power is an issue that is inseparable from the theme of marriage. On many occasions, it is about property, power and control. Outdated gender role ideations characterize marriages: it is geared towards imbalance power, where men have more privilege and authority than women.
