The Taming of the Shrew
Upon reading of the Taming of the shrew, comparisons on the difference of the contemporary society to the present era is noticeable. Showing a mere sight of the Shakespearean society and explaining the kind of life women experienced on the old days. Patriarchy is one of the main problems women of the Shakespearean era fought with. Living in a world wherein men having control to women, making them suffer for the kind of life they live. Secondly female domestication and submission, whereas going into marriage means women should only abide to the laws given by his husband without any right of her own. Economic interest in the other hand, symbolizes that women have no right to have any position in any government or particular role in a society. And lastly the picture of a love and hate relationship which is depicted by Petruchio and Kate. Petruchio being the embodiment of power of men within a marriage while Kate represents feminism way of rebellion towards her husband. In relation with present societies, male dominance flourish in their times. Understand that Petruchio’s way of courting and act towards marriage are rightful because it is the one accepted by the societ (Kahn)
Taming of the shrew can also be understood as a story about a farcical taming play, which is pictured out from Petruchio and Kate having small fights yet loving each other in the end. Understanding Petruchio’s wrong choice of jokes towards Kate makes the story focused on male dominance over women but looking in the other side it can make us realize that Petruchio is only doing these things to make Kate follow what he wants to happen. Through these playful teasing in the end Petruchio manages to win over Kate’s obedience making her change from a shrew into an obedient wife.
Going towards the male dominance issue, The Taming of the Shrew can be described as the mirror of male dominance, implying the sudden change of Kate from being a shrew into a wife who follows her husband. In exchange of Kate’s submission to her wife, assurance of her life is attained. Having all the respect and the things she wanted to make her to do so. Baptista her father made her marry Petruchio. Because acting as paterfamilias, Baptista should be the one who support his daughters whilst they are unmarried. Ensuring Kate’s marriage makes him free from his obligations to Kate leaving him with Bianca alone. (Kahn)
Marriage for convenience is one of the beliefs people go into. Since selling their own daughter can make them benefit for their own. As a tradition, marrying for dowry mainly benefits the father giving him the privilege of accepting It from the lover or the suitor. As paterfamilias in the Shakespearean era makes the father regime power over his daughters, to be the one to choose the man who will marry his child. Having been relying on the financial stability and capability of the suitor makes no comparison with a common woman who is paid for sexual pleasure. Women on Kate’s era are simply like auction items who were sold by the highest bidder. (Kahn)
