The current unconventional spaces of intimacy, which are characterized by various practices, including dating apps, sex work, and transactional intimacy, among others, constitute an illustration of complexities and contours of intimacy. The sex life, love, or intimacy has moved a notch higher to correspond to emerging technologies, economic and socio-political developments. Today, the traditional ways of sex life and dating are quickly fading away. This paper unravels many complexities that have emerged in contemporary love life.
The narrow ideological sense in which marriage was founder is currently under criticism. The root of marriage is anchored on an ideal monogamous couple whose relationship is tied by properties and being controlled by authorities through laws, Christianity, and being a citizen as the basis for a good citizen. Tallbear (2016) talks about how intimacy or monogamous families have been founded on the bedrock of violent human practices, for example, where settler sexuality and family constructs made both land and women to be property. However, such families remained dysfunctional, despite being operationalized by Christianity and government.
The indigenous people, as an example, have disciplined by the state to adopt an overarching practice of monogamy, nuclear family, and heteronormative-centered (Tallbear, 2016). This background of marriage is quite unsettling because it causes harm to both humans and earth. Tallbear (2016) argues that we must move towards non-monogamous open relationships where people cherish expansive indigenous kinship relations, which are not only limited to humans but also nonhuman: because this is the feasible way of being more emotionally, economically and environmentally just.
Open monogamy is a way of dissolving the chains of settler marriage mentality. Klesse (2011) appears to agree with Tallbear (2016) in their arguments. Klesse (2011) postulates on the philosophy of polyamory, which is an approach to sexuality and intimacy on an idea that it is worthy and valid to have more than one loving, romantic or erotic relationships. Polyamory presents alternatives to the monogamous couple and family-centered relationships. Polyamory reinforces the non-monogamous feature of participants’ mutual bonds. Polyamory is perceived as a challenge to monogamy cheating seating, where there is a protuberant and dominant cultural arrangement, which allows people to value exclusivity and institutionalization of relationships as part of the intimate and sexual landscape (Klasse, 2011). Polyamory is considered as a responsible, valuable, and love-based aspect of non-monogamous relationships, where there is a conceptual approach to relationships through the practice of ethics, honesty, integrity, equality, and reciprocity, in light of romance, intimacy or dating.
