It is essential to comprehend that the disaster experienced by Romeo and Juliet may be linked to the bitter wars that occurred between two families in Verona, a historic Italian city. It is essential to comprehend that both Romeo and Juliet had a strong love for each other, but they were required to maintain and hid their romance from their families since they understood that if the information leaked to their families, then the war would certainly occur causing damages and deaths. Therefore, the love Romeo and Juliet had for each other shaped the relationship they had with their parents. The relationship between parents and children in Romeo and Juliet would be determined as one where the parents have full control and make key decisions; also, they are harsh and caring to their children.
Romeo and Juliet demonstrate that parents have control over the social lives of their children. This is seen when both Romeo and Juliet are expected to allow and accept marriages that are arranged by their parents. Both Romeo and Juliet are however, against the arranged marriage and believe that marrying in secret would help in preventing their families from taking part in their marriage rite (Liebler, 1995). It is critical to understand that Juliet’s parents had arranged that she would be married to Count Paris, who was regarded as worthy. However, when Juliet rebels her parent’s decision, Lord Capulet, the father, disowns her because she did unappreciatively. Here Juliet would be said to have committed a serious abrogation by choosing not to participate in the marriage ceremony. This was so because marriage was regarded as a community ritual (Liebler, 1995). Ideally, this incident between Juliet and her father shows that parents have the right to be involved in their children’s marriage plans (Smith, 2007). Besides, the situation in the play demonstrates that parents had the ultimate power in decision making about social issues, and similar views are held in different communities in contemporary society. In this case, play has effectively demonstrated how the children challenge the accepted ideas of social hierarchy (Smith, 2007). The children may be considered disobedient for going against the wishes of their parents.
