Introduction
Same-sex marriage is a new social issue that has led to its legalization in some countries. Changing socio-cultural, political, and economic changes have led to the new trends in same-sex marriage whereby individuals are proud of their sexual status (Gehring, 2018). Notably, same-sex was, in the past, seen as a taboo, leading to its illegitimate status in most of the societies. However, social organizations, civil unions, and same-sex supporters, among others, have led to the recognition of L.G.B.T. rights. This recognition has led to the same-sex marriage debate leading to its acknowledgment as a social issue in different societies.
Personal Observations
Same-sex marriages have become social issues that have been termed illegal by conservative political, socio-cultural and religious groups. Importantly, each individual is equal; hence, should be free to express their sexuality. For instance, gay individuals should be issued the freedom to express their sexuality without worrying about the societal and religious views pertaining to the issue of same-sex marriage.
The church’s opinions towards gayness
Churches have had different perceptions of same-sex marriage, depending on their doctrines of belief (Gehring, 2018). Religion relies on the belief of its followers; hence, churches could have different opinions about lesbians and gays. Additionally, Christians could also have diverse views on the issue. For example, some believers could support gays as part of a family structure, while others could be against gays due to the lack of procreation (Gehring, 2018).
A review of the churches’ views on same-sex marriages shows that most of the churches do not support L.G.B.T. norms. As a result, gays have not had support from churches, especially when it comes to marriage as an expression of sexuality. Countries, where same-sex marriages have not been legalized, have seemed to influence the decision of churches and other religious groups towards the issue (Olson, Cadge & Harrison, 2006).
Importantly, religion presents a rigid foundation on the moral factors affecting a society (Gehring, 2018). For example, churches that are against L.G.B.T. will provide teachings to children that same-sex marriages are not holy before God. However, churches that support L.G.B.T. will come up with programs for persons with different sexual orientations. For instance, such churches will execute marriages for same-sex couples and provide advice on how they should accomplish the religion’s requirements despite their sex status.
The society’s opinions towards gayness
Societal trends associated with same-sex marriage have changed over time. However, the attitude has not been felt in all societies since it has varied with social class, gender, and age. For example, western countries have had a positive attitude towards gays leading to the legalization of same-sex marriage. Social class can influence the attitude towards L.G.B.T., whereby most cases have been found in the upper social classes (Olson, Cadge & Harrison, 2006).
