WP1 Draft #1. Two Letters To The Editor And One Reflection. Education

Coursework Instructions:

WP1: Enacting Public Rhetoric by Writing a “Letter to the Editor” (Two Letters, Technically!)
Part 1: Choose an issue that you care about, then craft a public argument in a “Letter to the Editor” that addresses the issue in some way. In doing so, it’s important to think about who, exactly, is writing this letter. For example, if you are a college student at Penn State Abington, are you a freshman? A Senior? An international student? How does your identity shape your relationship to this issue? Feel free to write from a different perspective (i.e., someone who isn’t you!).
Part 2: Think about your main goal. What do you want this Letter to the Editor to accomplish? Who, exactly, are you trying to win over? How do you want them to think, feel, or act differently based on your Letter to the Editor?
Part 3: Write a second Letter to the Editor and examine this issue from a different perspective. Who else might be interested in this issue, what argument(s) might that individual make, and who would they appeal to?
Part 4: Describe the rhetorical situation for each Letter to the Editor.
Part 5: After you’ve written your two different Letters to the Editor, you’ll need to analyze your decisions with a metacognitive reflection (note: “metacognition” means “thinking about thinking”). The main question you need to be answering here is: why did you do what you did? Lead me through your thought process as you completed this assignment. Additional questions that you can consider include:
Why did you make each specific argument? Which reasons were the most persuasive, to whom, and why?
Why did you select this particular publication site/outlet? What others did you consider?
How did writing from two different perspectives heighten your understanding of argumentation?
How did using examples/models help your ability to complete this assignment? What reading-writing connections did you make from your sample/example Letters to the Editor and the two that you wrote?
How did thinking about the “rhetorical situation” help you write these two Letters to the Editor?
WP1 is worth 10% of your WP1 unit grade. Each “Letter to the Editor” should be between 150-200 words (use the resources, below, for further assistance). Part 5, your metacognition reflection, should be at least 500 words long.

WP1 Draft #1
Dear Antonia Noori Farzan,
I go by the name Lisa, and I am an ardent and regular reader of The Washington Post. The main reason I am writing this letter is to applaud you in your article titled “ICE set up a fake university. Hundreds enrolled, not realizing it was a sting operation” and make it known that I support your views.
The elaborate sting operation set up by the ICE is beneficial for society as a whole because it is a brazen and shrewd way to catch students who are willing to go against the law to stay in the country, and recruiters who are willing to falsify documents to help them do so. For international students, the University of Farmington served as a way to circumvent immigration laws where in exchange for their “tuition fees,” they would obtain false documentation of their student status.
The ICE did an excellent job by arresting the so-called students and the recruiters who falsified numerous records including transcripts that the students would use to verify their progress and maintain their visas. These recruiters aided hundred if not thousands of foreign nationals stay in the United States illegally under the pretense for being students and disregarding the threat it poses to the country.
As a result of the sting, some “students” might be facing deportation which is a much-deserved consequence of attempting to subvert immigration law. The ICE should run more sting operations to curb transnational crimes, ensure that no immigrant is illegally in the country, and guarantee the safety of inhabitants in America.
WP1 Draft #2
Dear Antonia Noori Farzan,
My name is Zhangmir, and I wish to bring to your attention that I disagree with the content of your article titled “ICE set up a fake university. Hundreds enrolled, not realizing it was a sting operation.” I do not think that the fake university set up by the ICE was a good strategy, especially for international students. The ICEs counterfeit university baited existing international students on legitimate visas to transfer to their fake school.
In their website, the University of Farmington advertised reasonable tuition, flexible class schedules, and an innovative STEM curriculum. This was enough to draw the attention of many students who truly had the desire to further their education and if the university was on the list of acceptable institutions on the Homeland Security website (as stated in your article), how can these students be prosecuted?
I think that the move made by the ICE was deceptive because some of the students did not come to the USA for a prior campus tour where they could determine if the university was real or not. Additionally, when the students arrived at the University of...
