The passage, to which this sentence belongs, is significant since it reveals the true character of Raja as a selfish human being, who does not appreciate the effort put forward by his friends. As such, it is a summary of the larger perspective of the main character. Also, his character is in a direct relationship to the title of the book. Without question, both Ravi and Sarla treat Raja like a royalty without question. It becomes embedded into his consciousness and he later begins to expect the same treatment from everybody else.
