Part 1: Interview Reflection on Language Learning
The reflection is about a Chine student whose first language is Mandarin and how he learned English. I interviewed in order to understand his experience he first came to the United States. He never obliged and spared time to discuss how he struggled to learn the language, culture, and how people relate to the United States. As he disclosed, there are many areas that Tom worked with, including understanding, speaking, and writing in English. Therefore, he could not follow the coursework effective in the program in which he was enrolled. He had to spend a lot of time during the evening to learn English speaking and writing. When one aims to attain specific language skills, there is a need for consistency and viable exercises to grasp the tonal variation, pronunciation, and writing abilities. The student was focused on taking the exercises for about three months. In order to avoid wasting time in his studies, he was forced to defer his first year because he was not able to follow the instructions.
Through focus and determination, he was able to get acquainted with the United's language, culture, and way of life. There were many differences in the way people approached certain issues. He found that people were more concerned about their own things and could hardly speak while in public. The language barrier also exacerbated the process of cultural assimilation.
