Read James Gee's "What is Literacy?" and answer the following discussion questions for homework, and then we go over them in class.

1.) Describe, in your own words and understanding, what Gee means by discourses.
2.) How does the concept of an "identity kit" relate to "discourses"?
3.) List at least five examples of discourses that Gee does not mention.
4.) Summarize, or make a list in your own words, of the takeaways from the list of points that Gee argues is true about discourses (19).
5.) Give your own example of a dominant discourse.
6.) Give your own example of a secondary discourse.
7.) Gee argues, "Learning to read is always learning some aspect of some discourse" (22). Think about a reading that you have done this semester and describe how it is connected to a discourse.
8.) Describe the discourse that you "got for free."
9.) Put Gee's definition of literacy in your own words. Feel free to use examples in your rewording.
10.) If you were a teacher of language, what kind of secondary discourse would you use to give your students context to the dominant discourse of the school?
