The chapter outlines the history of the Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander communities. Diverse views and knowledge have been developed concerning the aboriginal communities as scholars from all over the world attempt to understand their affairs, with the current top debate being about identity; who should identify as an aboriginal? Various studies have linked the ongoing debates and the rivalry on the impacts of colonization, which the authors term as Western epistemological creation. Bodkin-Andrews et al. (2016, p. 23) argue that identity-based violence threatens the rich history of these communities. In their quest to help the reader understand the bias that is within the world views, the authors analyze works by various scholars, challenging their arguments as well as analyzing the strengths in these works. They analyze their views on different indigenous standpoints, the emergence of identity debate, and the value of storytelling as a communication method and for learning purposes. The authors utilize the D’harawal law story to help the reader understand that their traditions are not lost, but are still present in the modern world.
