BIOL 1014
Exam Review #3 (Chapters 10 and 11)

The exam reviews are worth 20 points each and are part of your grade. You will need to look up either the definitions of different terms, list and describe or answer questions about different topics in each chapter. These questions vary in points depending on the specific question. Be sure to answer all of the questions! The exam reviews do not cover every question that will be on the exam but serve as a review of each chapter on the exam. The exam review must be submitted before the due date and must be submitted as a Word document.

  1. What are the purposes of cellular reproduction via mitosis?
  2. Describe sister chromatids.
  3. Identify the activities that occur in the cell during interphase, mitosis and cytokinesis.
  4. Explain the significance of the G1, S and G2 stages of the cell cycle.
  5. What is the significance of the GO phase?
  6. Summarize the events in each phase of mitosis.
  7. Compare cytokinesis in a plant cell and an animal cell. (Must explain both for full credit)
  8. Describe the process of apoptosis.
  9. Identify the characteristics of cancer cells.
  10. Explain the purpose of meiosis.
  11. Define the following terms:  diploid, haploid, sister chromatid, and homologous chromosomes.
  12. Describe the processes of synapsis and crossing-over and explain when these processes occur within meiosis.
  13. Describe how chromosomal variation is an advantage to sexually reproducing organisms.
  14. List the phases of meiosis and briefly explain what events occur during each phase.
  15. Contrast the alignments of chromosomes during metaphase I and metaphase II.

1 What are the purposes of cellular reproduction via mitosis?
Mitosis is used for the growth, repair, and replacement of cells in multicellular organisms and for asexual reproduction in some species.
2 Describe sister chromatids.
Sister chromatids are the two identical copies of a chromosome attached after DNA replication.
3 Identify the activities that occur in the cell during interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis.
During interphase, the cell grows, carries out metabolic processes, and replicates its DNA. During mitosis, the chromosomes are separated into two identical sets and divided between the two daughter cells. Cytokinesis then divides the cytoplasm, resulting in two separate cells.
4 Explain the significance of the G1, S and G2 stages of the cell cycle.
G1 is the stage of the cell cycle when the cell grows and prepares for DNA replication. S is the stage when DNA is replicated. G2 is the stage when the cell prepares for mitosis.
5 What is the significance of the GO phase?
The GO phase is a resting stage in which the cell does not actively prepare for division.
6 Summarize the events in each phase of mitosis.
In prophase, the chromosomes condense, and the nuclear membrane breaks down. In metaphase, the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. In anaphase, the sister chromatids are pulled apart. In telophase, the nuclear membrane reforms around the two sets of chromosomes.
7 Compare cytokinesis in a...
