It is the action of this virus that perpetrates immune dysfunction observed in AIDS. The virus targets the white blood cells, particularly the CD4 cells (Weinstein et al., 2021). Once inside the cell, the virus makes copies of itself. After the multiplication, the virus also kills the CD4 cell. Since the virus has replicated, the copies find other CD4 cells and continue the cycle described above (Weinstein et al., 2021). Consequently, the disease continuously reduces the CD4 count, making the immune system of an individual compromised (Weinstein et al., 2021). This description demonstrates how immune dysfunction occurs in AIDS. Unless the disease is controlled through antiretroviral therapy, the CD4 count could become too low, weakening the immune system.
