Similarities or differences among the three pilgrimage experiences
All three pilgrimage experiences involve a considerable amount of danger and hardship. For example, in the Great German Pilgrimage, travelers face thieves and brigands (#3), hostile Bulgarians and Hungarians (#4), and the deadly threat of the Arabs in Kafar Sallam (#9). Similarly, in the accounts of Bernard of Angers and the Itinerarium Peregrinorum, the pilgrims face bandits, rugged terrain, and harsh weather conditions. Also, the pilgrims in all three accounts are motivated by religious devotion. For example, in the Great German Pilgrimage, the travelers undertake the journey to "worship at the sepulcher of the Lord (#1)."
On the contrary, the scale of the three pilgrimages is different. The Great German Pilgrimage involves "an almost incredible multitude" of people, including four bishops, many counts, and princes. By contrast, the Itinerarium Peregrinorum describes a smaller group of "a few men" traveling together while Bernard of Angers is on a solo pilgrimage. Besides, the outcome of the three pilgrimages is different. In the Great German Pilgrimage, the travelers successfully reach Jerusalem and spend thirteen days there before returning home.
