Assignment 3: The Story We Tell
The information about the organizations and individuals shared in the podcasts differ from the “stories that are told” since it reveals that these people who had been discriminated in the past, such as Latinos and Blacks, were now more powerful due to being organized in new groups that are very influential in changing the social issues. The groups are more powerful since they give these people an avenue to collectively fight for their rights and protect any member who has faced injustice. The podcast “The Young Lords: A Radical; History” reveals that the focus on capitalism is to improve people’s lives rather than causing conflicts between different groups. However, other groups, such as socialist groups, have proven to be just as effective as offering healthcare services, occupying a church, and had a newspaper. These groups were organized based on a vanguard revolutionary party comprised of predominantly people of color who popularised socialism at the local level. The podcast “Our Own People” shows that discrimination and other social issues influenced minorities to form organizations.
A second example is that young groups were now organizing towards improving their social conditions, which was not the case with the individuals in “stories that are told.” All this means that these individuals now have new opportunities and are legally protected to take part in political actions and improve their issues. The third example is that a group such as the Young Lords was very active in Chicago. Such groups were more of gangs, and they were not rife with violence and competition over the drug trade like in the case today. Instead, the gang was peaceful and was composed of Puerto Rican and Mexican youths. Chavez popularized it, which helps spear that transformation to very powerful organizations that have now evolved into violent gangs. The experiences that these people of color underwent in the streets and the imprisonment of their leaders during the 60s propelled their politicization. They ultimately worked together with other groups such as the Black Panthers party.
