Many parents are concerned about their children’s language development, and in particular, how children’s language and cognitive development will be impacted by being exposed to a second language. Some parents have concerns about exposure to a second language slowing the development of children’s primary language learning. Other parents want to know whether exposure to a second language might actually have benefits for children’s development. Many parents wonder about the best ways and best times to exposure their children to a second language.
Your assignment is to create a public information brochure to address the issue of children’s exposure to a second language. Your brochure should be 750 words total, excluding references (which should be APA formatted).
In your brochure, please address the costs and benefits of exposure to a second language, and also provide parents with tips on how and when to introduce a second language.

Are There Critical Moments for SLA?
Most people would believe that there is a ‘critical moment’ where the child’s capacity to attain a second language is maximized without compromising his learning capacity. However, this is more of a misconception as evidenced by a series of studies, and it was shown that the best period for a child to learn his second language should be as early as possible.
For example, in a review of previous studies done on the matter, Byers-Heinlein and Lew-Williams (2013), noted that as an individual grows up his capacity to learn a new language significantly decreases because of both biological and environmental factors. In contrast, focus, retention, and application could be maximized if a child would undergo SLA as early as possible.
As Parents, how can we Introduce a Second Language?
As parents it would be best to know a child’s circumstance first before teaching them. This is particularly the case for the use of ‘code mixing strategies’ wherein various languages are taught to their children as early as possible.




For example, if the immediate community (i.e., Mexican community) uses code mixing patterns in their everyday interaction, then it would be best to utilize this method in order to improve the child’s ability to integrate with this immediate society. Additionally, parents should prioritize providing “high-quality” communication to their children rather than having them learn from television since it could improve their children’s personal and social development in the long run.









Finally, it would be best to remove the idea that the use of “one-person-one-language strategy” (OPOL) is not necessary to ensure the child’s linguistic improvement. In fact, studies show that even if a single parent is using code mixing in communicating with the child, there is a high probability that the child could successfully learn bilingualism during his development (King, Fogle, & Logan‐Terry, 2008).
All in all, it is clear that the idea about the negative effects of early SLA is a common misconception. In fact, early bilingualism could even be more beneficial with time and effort to develop effective and high-quality communication with their children.
